After spending 20 years in the natural health industry, training both sales teams and health store retailers on natural products, I decided to take the plunge and go back to school, or rather the University of West London, where I spent 5 years studying clinical nutrition.
Shortly after qualifying as a registered nutritional therapist I joined a Dorset based bariatric team as a nutrition and health adviser. During my time there, I worked with hundreds of bariatric patients who were considered to be morbidly obese (BMI over 40). Many of these individuals had tried endless diets in the past, all of which had failed to help them control their weight. Some of them also had a range of social and mental health issues to deal with. Many had other complicated health conditions, which needed to be addressed as the same time.
I soon realised that the current government guidelines, on how to manage your weight, were outdated and certainly not the key to sustained weight-loss. I introduced low-carb, low-sugar, high protein meal plans, that encouraged my clients to eat nutrient dense foods and healthy fats, while avoiding processed meals and hydrogenated fats. Many of my clients had no idea how much sugar was hidden away in the low fat foods they had been encouraged to eat for years, and had avoided healthy foods like nuts as they still believed they were high in fat.
This approach greatly improved their weight-loss outcomes. Many clients saw their cholesterol levels lowered, high blood pressure reduced and, on several occasions, their diabetes medication discontinued, as their blood sugar levels had returned to normal.
I now use all the knowledge and experience I accumulated over the last 25 years to help people avoid becoming morbidly obese in the first place. Making dietary changes earlier in life can make all the difference to your health in later life. I work with a group of dedicated, like-minded, individuals who believe we can really make a difference and improve not only our client’s weight loss, but improve their long-term health.
Health and nutrition never stands still. New research is published every day, which is why I ensure that I take part in continuous professional development, attending conferences and training sessions on a regular basis. I am a member of BANT and CHNC, both associations making regular professional development a mandatory requirement.
